The Novel

Nahui Ollin, the Fifth Sun opens in Galicia in 1491, in the last months before the fall of Granada ends nearly eight centuries of Reconquista. A rebel's son grows up in the shadow of that ending — and finds himself pulled, one war at a time, toward Cuba, where he chooses to join Cortés's conquest.

From the Italian Wars to Cuba's encomienda system, the novel follows his path across an ocean and into the heart of the Aztec Empire, culminating at Cholula — one of the most consequential and most contested episodes of the entire campaign.

It is the opening novel of The Feathered Serpent trilogy: the story of the men who carried out a conquest they barely understood, and the empire that met them with a resistance no European army had faced before.
